“I thought Jason was going to hang that frame for you last night,” Amy said the next afternoon. I was making a spaghetti stir-fry with lots of vegetables. It was one of the few things I knew how to cook really well, and I took great pride in it.

“He had to leave,” I lied, hoping my face didn’t betray all the other things he’d helped me with. I felt terrible about lying to Amy, but for now, I just couldn’t see a way around it. Telling her I was kind of using her brother for sex seemed as bad as not telling her the truth.

“I’ll put it up,” she offered. “Just tell me where.”

“Thanks.” I smiled. “You’re sweet and I don’t deserve you.”

“Awww…” She smiled. “That’s only slightly true.”

I chuckled. “So, how’s Colin?”

“He’s great,” she said with a sigh. “His company is sending him to London for a week—a week!”

“Aww.” I gave her a sympathetic smile. “Seven days will go by faster than you expect.”

“I hope so. At least I’ll be able to catch up on my work.” She yawned and switched on the TV, flipping through a couple of options on the streaming channel. “My mom called, and she said to say hi to you, and that she’s looking forward to seeing you again whenever you decide you want some peace and quiet.”

“Oh.” I was pleased but taken aback. “That’s great.”

Amy shrugged.” What’re you doing later today?” she asked.

“Gimme a minute.” My phone was buzzing. I deftly opened the messenger app while stirring the veggies on the heated wok with my other hand.

The message was from Jason.

Come over and spend the night, it said simply.

Heat flared in my core. Just a text from him and my body was already burning with need.

I can’t. I have work tomorrow, I typed back.

I could barely see what I was doing as I stirred the pasta into the sautéed vegetables and meat.

“Smells good,” Amy said, giving me a small smile. “I know I’ve been spending a lot of time with Colin and it seems like we hardly ever get to talk or just hang out. I thought we could…you know, hang out tonight.”

“Oh…” I frowned. “I don’t mind that you spend a lot of your time with the guy you’re so crazy about you can’t see straight.”

She laughed. “But still…”

“And we talk,” I added.
